Blessing Health Systems in Quincy released and confirmed the first positive case of COVID-19 by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Adams County Health Department this afternoon.
The individual is a male in his 30’s to 40’s who was tested after recent travel exposure. He was tested at Blessing Hospital on Saturday March 14th and has since been under self-quarantine at his home awaiting test results. Blessing representatives state that all protocols were followed in the care of the patient and a review of the care provided on Saturday has confirmed that staff were not exposed during the patients care.
State and local health officials have started a contact investigation to ascertain what contacts the individual had prior to the test and diagnosis. That information will be forthcoming. Blessing officials notified their staff of the case confirmation earlier today.
As of Wednesday evening Illinois officials had announced 128 new coronavirus cases in the state, the largest daily spike since the outbreak began.
Officials attributed the high number to more widely available testing as well as the continued spread of the virus.
