Chiefs Football Preview

Keokuk Chiefs football gets started on Friday night and they will be hosting a green out in support of Let’s Cure CP, a group that helps raise money for finding a cure for Cerebral Palsy, and K-Play.

They are asking anyone who attends the game to wear a green shirt in support and there will also be a silent auction with items that have been donated from throughout the community.

Keokuk Activities Director Zach Summers said the McGhghy Family and others have done great work with the Green Out and they are expecting a big turnout for the game.

The Chiefs went 0-9 last season, but are in their first season under new head coach Quentin Hamner who has had previous successes as a head coach and a coordinator at other schools.

Returning players from last year’s team include starting quarterback Corey Skinner who threw five touchdowns and seven interceptions as a freshman. He also led the team with 268 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Also back this year is junior running back Braylen Martinez who averaged 4.9 yards a carry and scored one touchdown last season.

Sophomore Anthony Potratz was third on the team last year with 106 yards receiving while also hauling in three scores. He will more than likely see more targets this season with the graduation of top receiver Matt Wyatt.

Defensively the team will have some holes to fill some holes as the top three tacklers from last year are all gone and no player recorded an interception a year ago.

Hamner said earlier in the offseason that he expected more than a few players to play on both sides of the ball.

Keokuk opens against Davis County who went 1-8 last year and graduated one of their top offensive options, Collen Allen, who led the team with 551 rushing yards.

They do, however, return their number one receiver and several of their top defensive pieces.

Game time is set for 7 PM at Calvert Stadium and you can catch coverage on Z93 with pregame starting around 6:45 PM.
