Lee County is finding itself without a long term candidate to assume the role of medical examiner. The Lee County Board of Supervisors discussed possible options in hopes that a permanent solution may be found to fill the key position. Currently Dr. Eugenio Torres holds the position but has been looking to retire and his license expires in June of this year. The ambulance service in Lee county currently investigates deaths but a full time medical examiner is required to sign death certificates and order autopsies for deceased persons. At this time autopsies have to be sent to Iowa City at what the board described as a hefty cost. County Auditor Denise Fraise stated that she has been reaching out to nearby counties to see if a group of counties may be able to employ one medical examiner.
