The storybook ending for the Iowa Hawkeyes 2016 season fell short of coming to fruition in the Outback Bowl Monday afternoon. After winning three straight to end the regular season, the Hawkeyes ran out of steam and out of offense in a 30 to 3 defeat to the Florida Gators in Tampa. The Hawks got on the scoreboard first with a Keith Duncan field goal after Iowa intercepted passes on each of the first 2 Florida drives. However an inability to score from within the red zone would haunt the Hawkeyes as Florida scored a touchdown late in the second quarter to take a 10-3 lead into the half. The Hawkeyes came out and marched 63 yards before Keith Duncan missed a 29 yard field goal to start the 3rd. From there on it was all Florida as the offense clicked on explosive plays and the vaunted Florida defense made big plays of their own. Iowa quarterback CJ Beathard, playing with a sore hamstring, threw 3 interceptions in a second half that got away from the Hawks.  The loss closed the book on a 2016 season that saw the Hawkeyes go 8 and 5 overall.
