Keokuk Economic Development Corporation in partnership with the Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce is applying to be the 2019-2020 community partner for the University of Iowa’s Initiative for Sustainable Communities (

The successful community will benefit from roughly 20,000 hours of work (valued at an estimated $250,000) from U of Iowa students and faculty from a variety of disciplines. The community partner application will include 20 -30 projects that are incorporated into academic courses at the U of Iowa (fall and spring semesters). 

“We are seeking diverse and creative community projects to make the strongest community application possible.” says Shelley Oltmans, Executive Director of the Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce, “The boards of directors of Chamber and KEDC feel this is a great opportunity to begin implementing the award-winning Keokuk Comprehensive Plan!” 

Proposed projects can be related to economic development, housing, transportation, environmental issues, arts and culture, public health, social equity, and community vitality. If Keokuk is chosen as the community partner, 10 – 15 projects will be selected in partnership with IISC staff and the matched university faculty. Typical project cost $1000 – $2500 and is completed during a 16-week semester.

Keokuk project applicant must: 

· Be a nonprofit or government organization.

·  Provide 50% of project cost, KEDC will match the remaining 50%.

·  Designate project lead as point of contact for students and faculty (1-3  hours a week during semester).
