The Union representing correctional officers at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison still believes that the incident that took place at the prison on July 1st qualifies as a riot. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 61 President Danny Homan echoed previous statements Monday regarding why he feels the state is downplaying the significance of the incident.
An Associated Press report last week stated that the ISP is investigating roughly 80 people regarding the incident despite the fact that they are maintaining that only 50 or so inmates took part in the melee. Homan has a simple solution to decipher the question as to what occurred.
At this time Governor Reynolds has stated that an internal review of the security situation at the prison will be held but Homan would like that review to an all-inclusive review involving the union as well.
