It now appears that for the time being, the Lee County Sheriff’s department will only be getting one canine unit. At Friday’s canine fundraising committee meeting, the group decided that it would feel more comfortable just pursuing the one canine until the account has some more time to build up reserve funds. Last week Stacy Weber had announced that a 25 thousand dollar donation may make it possible to pursue 2 dogs but that plan will be put on hold for now. According to Weber, the proper paperwork has now been submitted to get the first canine, Alex, to Lee County to meet his new handler. Weber also stated that costs such as a bullet proof vest and outfitting the patrol cars is a reason why the committee will only pursue one dog at this time.
