Workers at the Iowa Fertilizer Plant have been the main victims of a spike in robberies around holiday time. In a post on its Facebook page, the Fort Madison Police Department warned residents of the type of theft that has been plaguing the Wever plant. According the post, perpetrators have been waiting for contract workers at the plant to cash their paychecks and then have robbed them of the cash. According to police chief Tim Sittig, many of the victims are migrant workers who don’t speak English that get robbed before they can wire transfer the money to their families. Sittig said that while this type of crime hasn’t spread to other parts of Lee County, citizens should be on the watch and keep from carrying large amounts of cash on their person.
